Quickly Store Items to View Later with Pistashio

Pistashio calls itself a “social to-do list” because it lets you store items for later, but your items are also public and can be shared on your Twitter and Facebook. If you’re familiar with and/or use the service Springpad, then you’ll understand how Pistashio works. It offers many of the same features except without the notebook aspect of the service; instead you have a stash for your items. All-in-all, Pistashio is really a great tool for keeping track of items that you want to remember later like articles, restaurants, videos, music, etc.

With Pistashio, you add items to your “stash” using the website or a browser tool (Chrome extension or bookmarklet). When adding via the website,  make sure that the item you’re adding is being added to the correct category tab (see Accessing Your Items below for more info).

You can then add a title, text (up to 80 characters), URL, and address or location. One of the best things about Pistashio is that you can choose to set a reminder for a specific day or date and choose how to receive the alert (via email or Twitter). You can also choose to share the item on Twitter (Facebook is coming soon).

Once you have items added to your stash, you can add stars to the more important ones and check them off once complete. Your items can also be rearranged via drag and drop, archived, and shared right from the dashboard.

Adding items with the extension is a little different in that you’re asked to first select a category for the item that you’re adding. There are five categories: eat & drink, read, listen, watch, see & do. After you choose a category, you can add a title, quick note, and set a reminder if needed. There is also an option to share on Twitter. The URL will, of course, automatically be attached to the item.

Add New Items to Pistashio via Chrome Extension.

You may notice that when you first go to the Pistashio dashboard all of your items are not listed, this is because the default view is the “Eat & Drink” tab. Eat category has its own tab and there is currently no way to view all categories at once. So, if you added an article to read, it will be under the “Read” tab.

Category Tabs in Pistashio.

Don’t worry if you happen to add an item to the default “Eat & Drink” tab by accident (as I did at first). You can easily edit the item and change the category.

From the left sidebar you can get a quick glimpse of the total items you have in your stash, the number of items shared, and the number of items completed (checked off).

View Stashed Items From Other Users.

In the right sidebar you can see recently added items and the most popular items added to the stash of other users. If you click on an item added by someone else, you’ll have the option to add it to your own stash and/or share it with friends.

Pistashio definitely needs a mobile app, whether it be native or a mobile optimized site. I’d definitely love the ability to access my items on the go. I’d also like the ability to view all items at a glance rather than just by category. Besides that, it seems like a really great, useful service. The only issue may be the other competitors out there that already have a large user-base like Springpad, Evernote, Remember the Milk, Simplenote, Read it Later, etc.

What are your thoughts on Pistashio?
