Best Newspaper Writing, 2008-2009 Edition

Best Newspaper Writing, 2008-2009 Edition

For more than 25 years, Poynter faculty have presented the year's best newswriting and community service photojournalism with the winners and finalists of the American Society of Newspaper Editors annual competition. An ideal reader for aspiring journalists, the volume provides quality models students can study and emulate.

Poynter's renowned faculty-- including Roy Peter Clark, Karen Dunlap, Tom French, Kenny Irby, Chip Scanlan, and Keith Woods-- take your students "Behind the Story" with the book's much heralded features. In-depth interviews with the winners let readers benefit from unique insight into how these reporters developed their stories into, in some cases, Pulitzer Prize-winning pieces. Ethical challenges are tackled, as are discussions of how to report and present news online. "Sources Say" features offer students perspective on a piece from those at the heart of the story, while the ever-popular "X-Ray Readings" are back, dissecting articles to show students exactly how writers ply their craft, sentence by sentence.

Always covering the range of journalism, this edition showcases sections on breaking news, investigative reporting, editorials, narrative writing, columns, photojournalism, plus new sections on covering immigration, race and ethnicity, and writing about human connections.

Acting Out Culture: Reading and Writing

Acting Out Culture: Reading and Writing
Students are bombarded every day with media messages laden with rules: how true patriots should act, how healthy people eat, what real women should look like. Acting Out Culture is the first thematic composition reader to focus students' attention beyond what rules and norms govern their everyday behavior to how the rules themselves have been shaped over time. The author, James Miller, has drawn on his cutting-edge expertise in cultural analysis to help students inquire into those social norms and respond with writing that positions them as citizens making informed decisions about their world.

Make Business Blogging fun: writing about holidays, birthdays and other milestones

This guest post is Absolutely writeby Lindsey McCaffrey of.

Business bloggers: you will find every day labor day?

Take a breather: finding things to blog about does not have to be hard work.

In the light of the upcoming labor day weekend, I am going to share a little tip that I would like to tell customers who blog: holidays, birthdays and other commemoration consider.

By your blog post for an occasion, you can come up with some creative, timely and fun pieces.

Here is an example of giving your writing a holiday spin: leading until last year the Christmas season, I compiled my PR pet peeves, in an article best Santa — a PR expert of Christmas wish list.

Tip: think not just about the holiday you celebrate: those of other cultures and countries consider. You can just find an interesting rite or ritual to write about.

Mark a milestone birthday or event such as:

a birthday, anniversary year or death day/year of someone famous, infamous or otherwise (it need to be someone your readers would know, provided that there is relevant to the article) the birthday (day or annual) of a certain historical eventthe year of the release of a book, album, film or otherwise — something that maybe you learned a lot from, or that resonates strongly with you.

Tip: for more impact, it is the best on the occasion of a "landmark year" (think 5, 10, 15, 20 ... you get the picture) instead of something like the 53rd anniversary of X, Y, or Z.

There are also less-serious, officially recognized non-at-all days, months, and milestones observed worldwide. For example, in the United States:

Tip: before writing about a particular compliance, you can qualify. Ensure that it is something that at least a few people actually recognize, and not something that Joe called down the street about beer with the guys.

Here are just a few websites to use as resources:

What are some fun holiday, birthdays and anniversary you have written or read about?

Writing about Writing: A College Reader

Writing about Writing: A College Reader
When Doug Downs and Elizabeth Wardle published their article “Teaching about Writing, Righting Misconceptions” in June 2007, they challenged the field to imagine a new approach to first-year composition. Their groundbreaking new reader, Writing About Writing, does exactly that, by encouraging students to draw on what they know in order to contribute to ongoing conversations about writing and literacy.

Class-tested by thousands of students, Writing about Writing presents accessible writing studies research by authors such as Donald Murray, Mike Rose, and Deborah Brandt, together with popular texts by authors such as Malcolm X, Sherman Alexie, and Junot D?az. Throughout the book, friendly explanations and scaffolded questions help students connect to readings and — even more important — develop knowledge about writing they can use at work, in their everyday lives, and in college.

The conversation on writing about writing continues on the authors' blog, Write On: Notes on Writing about Writing (a channel on Bedford Bits, Bedford/St.Martin's blog for teachers of writing).

Scientific Writing and Communication: Papers, Proposals, and Presentations

Scientific Writing and Communication: Papers, Proposals, and PresentationsScientific Writing and Communication: Papers, Proposals, and Presentations covers all the areas of scientific communication that a scientist needs to know and to master to successfully promote his or her research and career. This unique "all-in-one" handbook begins with a discussion of the basics of scientific writing style and composition and then applies these principles to writing research papers, review articles, grant proposals, research statements, and resum?s as well as to preparing academic presentations and posters.

FEATURES:

A practical presentation carefully introduces such basic writing mechanics as word choice and word location, sentence structure, and paragraph organization before moving into manuscript planning and organizational strategies. Extensive hands-on guidance for composing scientific documents and presentations then follows.

Relevant and multi-disciplinary examples taken from real research papers and grant proposals by writers ranging from students to Nobel Laureates illustrate clear technical writing as well as common mistakes that one should avoid. Examples are drawn from a broad range of scientific disciplines including medicine, molecular biology, biochemistry, ecology, geology, chemistry, engineering, and physics.

Extensive end-of-chapter exercise sets provide the opportunity to review style and composition principles and encourage readers to apply them to their own writing.

Writing guidelines and revision checklists warn scientists against common pitfalls and equip them with the most successful techniques to revise a scientific paper, review article, or grant proposal.

Annotated text passages bring the writing principles and guidelines to life by applying them to real-world, relevant, and multidisciplinary examples.

Clear, easy-to-follow writing style is understandable to both native and non-native English speakers; special ESL features address problems faced by non-native English speakers.

Eight chapters on grant writing demonstrate how to write successful grant applications and how to avoid the most common application mistakes.

Covering all the facets of communication that scientists need to master, Scientific Writing and Communication: Papers, Proposals, and Presentations is ideal for a wide range of readers--from upper-level undergraduates and graduate students to postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and professional researchers--in the life sciences, medicine, psychology, chemistry, and engineering.

Writing for Social Scientists: How to Start and Finish Your Thesis, Book, or Article: Second Edition (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing)

Writing for Social Scientists: How to Start and Finish Your Thesis, Book, or Article: Second Edition (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing)
Students and researchers all write under pressure, and those pressures—most lamentably, the desire to impress your audience rather than to communicate with them—often lead to pretentious prose, academic posturing, and, not infrequently, writer’s block.

Sociologist Howard S. Becker has written the classic book on how to conquer these pressures and simply write. First published nearly twenty years ago, Writing for Social Scientists has become a lifesaver for writers in all fields, from beginning students to published authors. Becker’s message is clear: in order to learn how to write, take a deep breath and then begin writing. Revise. Repeat.

It is not always an easy process, as Becker wryly relates. Decades of teaching, researching, and writing have given him plenty of material, and Becker neatly exposes the foibles of academia and its “publish or perish” atmosphere. Wordiness, the passive voice, inserting a “the way in which” when a simple “how” will do—all these mechanisms are a part of the social structure of academic writing. By shrugging off such impediments—or at the very least, putting them aside for a few hours—we can reform our work habits and start writing lucidly without worrying about grades, peer approval, or the “literature.”

In this new edition, Becker takes account of major changes in the computer tools available to writers today, and also substantially expands his analysis of how academic institutions create problems for them. As competition in academia grows increasingly heated, Writing for Social Scientists will provide solace to a new generation of frazzled, would-be writers.
